"Put a Penny in the Slot" has to be one of the most shyly nonchalant songs ever written from the perspective of an obsessed ex-lover, as Regan apologizes for pilfering souvenirs from his former girlfriend before meandering into tangential anecdotes and peppering his narrative with references to Saul Bellow and Paul Auster.

Fionn's signed to Bella Union, one of the few remaining Independent labels. We've toured with Howling Bells and are about to tour with Kissaway Trail, also signed to the label, so I decided to give his album a listen. He's a fantastic emerging folk star and even though he didn't win the Mercury music prize, getting nominated at least gave him the recognition he deserves.

Fionn Regan is an Irish singer/songwriter who has a conversational melodic slant to his vocals which give him a sound that's somewhere between Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and Sufjan Stevens - sweet, earnest, and slightly wounded. The lyrics to Put a Penny In The Slot have all of the ese and grace of Ron Sexsmith's great work. The young singer, who also manages to sing the praises of novelists Paul Auster and Saul Bellow in the track, doesn't overwhelm with his prose.

But, disliking this track from Fionn Regan would be akin to disliking dew in the morning, shimmering rainbows and puppies in the snow, i.e. nigh-on impossible, for even the most cynical. It's delicate, charming and as catchy as a nursery rhyme you've always half-known, albeit with not-so-sinister lyrics than your average 'Ring a Ring O'Roses'.
