“Don’t Save Me” is one of the great singles of the century so far partly because it’s a classic irresistible pop tune, a genuine ecstatic singalong number, but on top of that it’s gorgeously produced, in vintage Scandinavian style with big ABBA chords plus a dash of early-rock-era Dylan, and I adore her singing – she seems to have extraordinary subtlety and intelligence for someone so early in her career, combined with real feeling and mischievous pop brightness with a sharp, ironic edge.

Over the last few years the blogosphere's become lousy with uber-trendy Norwegian pop sensations, but Larsen seems to stand out from the pack (brunette!) with an appealingly organic (banjos!) approach. Were she from Glendale or Des Moines we might be calling this stuff "singer-songwriter," but rarely is that tag ever applied to anyone with such charm, joie de vivre, or melodic chops.

The bright, kitchen-sink production on first single "Don't Save Me" twinkles benignly with a sterile, fjord-pop luster. It throws scattershot percussion-- wide drums and handclaps-- next to synths, a Stevie Wonder harmonica, and an ABBA piano refrain. Yet its busy sound is meaningfully busy, redeemed in the tug of war between the song's ebullient veneer and its freighted lyrics.

Cursory analysis of elements in high-scoring songs on the Singles Jukebox would reveal at least 90% of "Don't Save Me": preferably female-fronted, preferably by a cute European girl preferably under 25, preferably meticulously-constructed radio pop, preferably clever, clean and a little whimsical, preferably on the light side of the rock, preferably inspires the tired impulse to say "perfect pop" in a blurb and then smartly strike it.

It's remarkable how much that ABBA-esque ringing piano refrain adds to this song, kicking it up from being a lovely acoustic-based pop ballad to something far more classic and epic without being particularly melodramatic. This is quite simply one of the best, most masterfully composed pop singles of the year thus far. Rightfully, this track is blowing up in Norway at the moment, but with any luck, this should spread well beyond Scandinavia over the course of the year.
